Spravato is a nasal spray containing esketamine. It has become a popular treatment option for many individuals experiencing persistent depression despite having tried multiple traditional antidepressants.
If you are wondering how long Spravato treatment is, our knowledgeable providers at The Neuropsychiatry & TMS Group can answer your questions and help you decide whether it is a good option for you.
Each Spravato treatment session is about two to three hours long in total. At the start of your session, we will take your pre-dose vitals and administer the nasal spray in a controlled environment. Receiving the treatment only takes a few minutes. Afterwards, you can relax in a recliner while we monitor your blood pressure, your pulse, and any dissociative sensations to ensure the treatment is tolerated well and you are not experiencing any harmful side effects.
After a two-hour observation period, you are free to go about your day. It is important to note that you must arrange a ride home, as we do not recommend driving until the day following treatment.
Your Spravato treatment schedule is typically designed in three phases.
Spravato treatment typically begins with an intensive induction phase, lasting four weeks. During this initial period, you will likely receive two treatments per week. This schedule helps our providers quickly assess your response and facilitates rapid symptom improvement. Regular evaluations during this phase ensure that your treatment is effective and adjustments can be made if needed.
Assuming you improve, the next four weeks will drop to once-weekly dosing. This phase is intended to test whether your gains will hold with fewer visits while your brain’s glutamate networks continue remodeling. Most people welcome the lighter schedule, and it helps many to stabilize their progress. Our providers will remain in touch to make modifications, if necessary.
After your initial eight-week regimen, Spravato therapy moves into a maintenance phase designed to sustain your symptom relief. This phase typically involves one treatment session per week or bi-weekly sessions based on your individual progress. The duration of this phase is highly personalized and dependent on your ongoing response and our provider's recommendations. We perform regular assessments throughout this period to guide adjustments as needed.
The length of your Spravato treatment varies depending on your specific case. Many of our clients benefit from several months of ongoing therapy, while others require longer periods to sustain their results.
Factors that can influence your treatment duration include the severity of your depression, your individual response to the esketamine therapy, and your specific lifestyle considerations. Our providers will regularly discuss your progress and treatment expectations, ensuring transparency and clarity at all stages of your mental health journey.
When considering Spravato, it is important to understand and plan for the commitment involved. The initial few weeks of treatment require frequent appointments, and it is essential that you are able to fit each session into your schedule.
However, you will have more flexibility in the later stages of your therapy. Sessions can be tailored based on your lifestyle and therapeutic needs, and open dialogue with your provider can help streamline your experience with Spravato treatment.
